Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah
The field of conflict medicine is unique discipline because it combines scholarly analysis with the everyday practice of emergency medicine in complex situations. This places the work and experiences of Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah squarely into the realm of the social sciences, with an emphasis on conflict studies within the Middle East.
In this interactive ACMES Annual Lecture Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah will build on his extensive scholarly repertoire, of which a selection can be accessed here 2023, 2021, 2020, 2020b, 2018, 2014, as well as his prolonged and diverse experiences as an MD in Yemen, Iraq, Syria, South Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories.
The urgent and ongoing situation in Gaza draws out both the complexity and necessity for interdisciplinary scholarly cooperation both inside and outside of the field.
Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah is a British-Palestinian Associate Professor of Surgery and a Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon. In April 2024 he was elected Rector of the University of Glasgow. He has worked as a war surgeon in Yemen, Iraq, Syria, South Lebanon and during the 4 wars in the Gaza Strip (2008, 2012, 2014 & 2021). On the 9th of October 2023 he entered the Gaza Strip and worked in Shifa Hospital and then Al-Ahli-Baptist Hospital for 43 days during the current war.
